Why preventive maintenance is the most profitable investment before the harvest season

In the fruit and vegetable processing industry, there is a moment when every hour of operation counts. During the harvest campaign, sorting, washing, and packaging lines work almost continuously, and an unplanned stoppage can mean delivery delays, additional costs, and, in some cases, the loss of part of the production.

For this reason, preparing equipment before the season starts should not be viewed as an expense, but as an investment in production continuity.

Why do most breakdowns occur during peak periods?

Paradoxically, many technical problems are not caused by a single defective component, but by wear and tear accumulated over the preceding months.

A bearing starting to show play, an incorrectly tensioned belt, or a sensor covered in buildup may appear to function normally during periods of low activity. However, when the line operates 10–16 hours a day, any component near the end of its lifespan can fail at the most inconvenient moment.

  • Pneumatic and electrical systems

In addition to inspecting for wear, calibrating sorting and weighing equipment is recommended so that the line delivers consistent performance from day one.

Spare parts can mean the difference between minutes and days

One of the most common mistakes is ordering parts only after a breakdown occurs.

During peak periods, delivery times can be longer, and the lack of a seemingly minor component can shut down the entire processing line.

Therefore, it is recommended to maintain a minimum stock of consumables and high-wear parts before the season begins. Belts, bearings, sensors, rollers, or gaskets are components that can significantly reduce downtime when available immediately on-site.

Maintenance is about more than avoiding breakdowns

The benefits of a preventive overhaul extend beyond reducing the risk of equipment failure.

Properly adjusted and maintained equipment contributes to:

  • More stable operation across the entire line
  • Reduced energy consumption

During the season, every unplanned downtime generates costs that far exceed the price of a preventive overhaul. Beyond the repair itself, factors like lost time, idle staff, delivery delays, and potential product losses must be factored in.

By comparison, a planned inspection can be carried out before the campaign begins, at a time when maintenance work will not disturb factory operations.

The performance of a processing line depends not only on the quality of the equipment, but also on how well it is maintained. A preventive maintenance strategy, supported by periodic checks and the availability of essential spare parts, reduces the risk of unplanned downtime and ensures stable production throughout the season.

For any fruit and vegetable processor, preparing equipment well in advance is one of the most effective ways to protect investment and maintain steady production when demand reaches its peak.
